How did you get involved in the design industry?
I began working as a gardener in college and positively loved it. After receiving my degree and years of being unsatisfied in other lines of work, I decided to follow my bliss and to get back into the landscape industry. Back then I did it all, maintenance, gardening, design and build and I couldn't be happier. Now I focus on design, consultations and gardening and I'm still thrilled to be doing it.

What inspires you?
The Portland Japanese Garden which is considered one of the best Japanese gardens outside of Japan, the work of Oehme Van Sweden, nature herself and any well balanced, well designed natural space.

What is your favorite 'green' product?
Plants! And my favorites change all the time. This year I've been lowing Catmint, Nepeta 'Walker's Low', Rugosa Roses, fall blooming crocus, spring bulbs, Witch Hazel, ornamental grasses, sedums, European Beech trees and always mature Oak trees. Product wise it's decomposed granite. The best surface we could ask for.

What was your most challenging project and why?
Each project is unique and has it's own challenges and joys. There is always a solution, sometimes the challenge is just to keep the creative juices flowing and to think around the challenge.

Which project are you most proud of?
The Zulauf's garden which has a very significant slope from the street to the house and had an unsafe and uncomplimentary entrance to the home. I was able to create a stunning entrance and make use of the slope creating a water feature that added movement and sound to their landscape.

What is the best advice you’ve ever given or received?
Growing a garden is like life, change is inevitable and welcome, but remember your overall goals and think long term. Plant trees and wildflowers.
